A World First: Flying FPV Through an Active Coal Mine

The Coal Journey, Like You've Never Seen It

Mining operations are enormous, complex, and constantly moving but that scale is genuinely difficult to communicate. Photos and standard drone shots show you a mine site. They don't make you feel it.

When AngloAmerican approached us wanting to showcase their operations in a way nobody had attempted before, we proposed something ambitious: flying an FPV (First-Person View) drone directly through an active open-cut coal mine, capturing the entire coal journey in one continuous, immersive sequence, from overburden removal, through retrieval and processing, to final train load-out.

As far as we're aware, it had never been done on a live mine site before.

Safety First, Always

An active mine is not a forgiving environment for creative risk-taking. Heavy machinery, tight tolerances, and zero room for error meant this project demanded months of planning before a single frame was captured.

We worked closely with AngloAmerican's site team to map out precise flight paths in advance, drawing on specialised FPV certifications and experience that few production companies in Australia have access to. To remove any element of guesswork on the day, we built a computer simulation of the mine site itself - allowing our FPV pilot to rehearse every movement virtually, so execution on-site was fast, controlled, and safe.

Zero risk to personnel. Zero contamination of the coal product. That was the standard we held ourselves to throughout.

The Result

The final piece - enhanced with a custom cinematic soundtrack - became something genuinely immersive. It went viral across AngloAmerican's internal and external platforms, driving real engagement and, by all accounts, a noticeable lift in employee pride.

But it did more than perform well. It gave people outside the industry a rare, visceral sense of what modern mining actually looks like - the scale, the precision, the sheer coordination involved in getting coal from the ground to a train carriage.

This project is a good example of what we believe at Numax Media: even the most industrial, technical operations can be told as a genuinely compelling visual story - you just need the right approach, the right planning, and a crew willing to do the groundwork before the cameras roll.
